I love my AS-400 saxophone, it’s beautifully finished with a rich tone and a fine sturdy carrying case. For the price, it can’t be beaten.

Great sound quality. Came to me tuned. Now I can finally get back into my music. Also the case is high quality. Love it!

Oh, if only I could play it as well as I know it can sound - or maybe as well as I used to play when I was much younger! But as I did then, I’ll keep practicing. Thanks for a great value.

Amazing saxophone, but ok ligature

I feel like my ligature was poorly made. I could tell that it wasn't the best. I now use another ligature along with the mouthpiece to play my saxophone. I'm still very happy with the saxophone, just a bit disappointed by the build quality of the ligature.

Update from 2023 purchase

This is an update from my 2023 purchase. Still a great horn. I do my own repair work as there are no pros close (live in Australia). After about 400 hours on this machine, did a clean, adjust and lubricate. This involves removing all the keywork, cleaning the pads and machine. There were no light leaks and it is still in excellent regulation. Surprising. Only replaced two corks more as a personal preference. It produces good sound, high to low, soft to loud. It is a bit noisy because of the low cost pads and regulation material but zoK for this price point. The important thing is I enjoy playing it. Will put in high end pads in the next 6 months along with a cork and felt (green) setup I like. That it arrives in playing condition via DHL and a JP pro sets it up is high value.

Can’t recommend enough

I have been playing on the professional unlacquered model for two years now and have loved every moment of it. I played it in a paid college ensemble, and the range, depth of sound, dynamic ability, and consistency has made me a lifelong Jean Paul user. I truly cannot recommend it enough.
Playing in a college band, we swing those things around, dance, set it quickly up and down, put it through freezing and hot temperatures, and it has withstood everything. Rain or shine, the outdoor bands play and I know it is always ready for what I throw at it.
And the mouthpiece is comes with too is reliable as well. By far the best set up yet.

All the best and congrats!!!

Congratulations. Doc and you'all make a great team.

This thing was $80?? Totally worth it. Very easy to play

High School All-State Quality

We had purchased the TS-400 model in April 2024 for my 14 year old High School Freshman so that he would have his own instrument through his high school experiences. Within this same year he has accomplished many goals, such as 2025 W.Va. 2nd Chair Tenor Saxophone, 2025 West Virginia University High School Honor Bands, 2025 West Virginia Wesleyan Jazz Honor Bands, and 2024 249th Army Band All State Masterclass. And his freshman year isn't even over yet. 98% of his accomplishments is through his own dedication, hard work, etc. but the quality of instrument definitely matters. This student horn through Jean Paul has given my child wonderful and lifelong memories and the quality and sound is beyond measure for price, quality, etc. Highly recommend this instrument and Highly Recommend Jean Paul quality ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

My JPTS860 review

If you are thinking about buying a professional level tenor sax, you will not be disappointed with this horn. It feels great in your hands. Meaning, the keys are where they suppose to be and the horn is very comfortable to play. The tone is wonderful. My low b-flat key had a little light coming thru but I fixed that myself. I also had the same problem with my Selmer and that is a $5000 horn. Get yourself a good mouthpiece and this tenor will sing. I am playing on a Theo Wanne Durga mouthpiece and it makes this horn really sing from low B-flat to altissimo C. I love this horn. My Alto is a Selmer Series III Jubilee, my soprano is a Yanagisawa. I would also own Jean Paul's curved soprano but my fingers on my right hand constantly hit the bell of the horn. If it was not for that, I would not have purchased my Yanagisawa. That is how well that horn sounded and played but this review is about Jean Paul's TS860. Save yourself a lot of money and get yourself one if you are in the market for a professional level tenor sax before the price goes up. The anniversary engraving is just icing on the cake. I was not paid or given anything for this review. OH and the customer service is second to none.

It’s a great saxophone

Cut to the chase: I like it!

I'm a semi-pro saxophonist with over 60 years experience. I practice daily, I play in several rehearsing/performing ensembles—both jazz and “legit”--and I have a standing weekly jazz gig, as well as several paying jazz jobs per month.

I needed a back-up instrument because my beloved Mk6 (my only working horn) had to go to the repair tech for over a week.

I had watched Dr Wally's YT reviews, and after calling JP and pleading with them to make sure my purchase would be ready to go out of the box, they sent me their AS860 Anniversary Edition in just two days. The anxiety of buying a horn sight-unseen was somewhat mitigated by JP's provided video of the play test of my actual item, as well as by Dr Wally's endorsement.

So how does it play and sound? The JP's sonic and ergonomic properties seem similar to the YAS 62's I have tried over the years—i.e., excellent intonation and smooth keywork, utter ease of low and high note production, and apparent robustness of construction. Like the Japanese brands however, it lacks the diffuse, breathy, multi-overtone, Desmond-like timbre of my Mk 6. Nevertheless, the JP acquitted itself nicely on my weekly jazz gig, and I doubt anyone but me heard the subtleties of tone I felt were missing. (Surprisingly the best results for a darker sound came from using the supplied mouthpiece, rather than any of my high-end MP's! Unheard of!)

As a back-up horn for a picky performer, I couldn't possibility ask for more at this price point. Moreover, I have decided to use the JP exclusively for my concert band work (with my S80 C* MP), as The 860 sound is more in line with the tone color, projection, and intonation of my band-mates Yanis and Yamas.

Good work, JeanPaul!

The saxophone sounded great and they really do test each instrument before they are sent out for delivery. Best customer service ever. Felipe Estupiñan worked swiftly to fix all of my issues and Mario sounds amazing testing my saxophone. Satisfied customer here and highly recommend Jean Paul for any musical purchases.

Great saxophone to learn on for an adult beginner with experience only on the French Horn!

According to my saxophone teacher, the sound and build of this instrument is good. The only difficulty I had was adjusting the neck strap, perhaps in part owing to Parkinson disease. So I had to go to a wind instrument specialty shop in Boston and purchase a more suitable neck strap (it cost $107.)

Very nice instrument and great service!

Beautiful soprano saxophone which plays great. Also, can’t say enough good things about the Jean Paul staff and their helpfulness in selecting and shipping the saxophone!

Solid clarinet for an intermediate play or even beginner.

A very beautiful instrument, and while I am learning trumpet, its use is quite easy. Jean Paul, to me, put genuine efforts into making a great sounding and responsive tool! Just wish I had more time daily to practice between secular work and family obligations. My trumpet was and is worth the funds I spent in obtaining it. I've named it 'Smooth Operator'.

Still haven’t received the order

I will happily revisit this review as soon as the order is delivered.
